If you use Coinbase with Stoic, you can create a dedicated portfolio for automated trading instead of allowing the trading strategy to operate on your Default Portfolio. This setup lets you keep the funds allocated to automated trading separate from the rest of your Coinbase account.
Follow the steps below to create a dedicated portfolio, configure API permissions, and send the portfolio UUID to the Stoic support team.
Step 1. Pause trading in Stoic
If your Coinbase account is already connected to Stoic and trading is active, open your Stoic app settings and pause or stop trading. Pausing trading ensures that the bot does not place trades in your Default Portfolio while you create and configure your dedicated portfolio.
Important: Do not resume trading until the Stoic support team confirms that your strategy has been connected to the correct portfolio.
If you have not connected your Coinbase account to Stoic yet, follow the Coinbase connection guide to connect your account using Coinbase OAuth. Then pause trading before continuing with the next steps.
Step 2. Create a new portfolio (subaccount)
Log in to your Coinbase account and navigate to the Advanced section.
In the left sidebar, click on the Portfolio tab.
Click the Create Portfolio button in the top right corner of the screen.
Enter a clear name for your new portfolio (e.g.,
Bot TradingorAlgo Strategy) and click Create.Click Deposit or Transfer to move the desired amount of crypto or fiat from your Default Portfolio to the new subaccount.
Step 3. Enable trading exclusively for this portfolio
To ensure a trading system or bot can manage only the allocated subaccount, you must create a restricted-access API key.
Click on your profile icon in the top right corner and go to API (or open the Coinbase Developer Platform).
Click the Create API Key button.
In the Portfolio dropdown menu, select only your newly created portfolio instead of All Portfolios.
Under Permissions, check the boxes only for the required rights:
View (View balances and account history) — Required.
Trade (Create and cancel orders) — Required for executing trades.
Transfer (Withdraw or transfer funds) — Leave unchecked for security purposes.
Complete the 2FA (two-factor authentication) verification. The system will then display your API Key and API Secret. Save these in a secure location.
Step 4. How to find your portfolio UUID
The UUID (Universally Unique Identifier) consists of a string of letters, numbers, and hyphens. Technical support needs this identifier to accurately link the trading strategy to your subaccount.
The fastest way to find the UUID is through your browser's address bar:
Go to the Portfolio section and click on the name of your new subaccount to open its details.
Look at the URL in your browser's address bar at the top of the screen. It will look similar to this:
[https://www.coinbase.com/advanced-trade/portfolios/d8495a9e-c851-460f-9022-da5e5b66d734](https://www.coinbase.com/advanced-trade/portfolios/d8495a9e-c851-460f-9022-da5e5b66d734)The string of characters at the very end of the link after the slash (819e5941-6ad3-4d5d-83f2-03e3a0a4657f) is your portfolio UUID.
Step 5. Report the details to support
Copy your portfolio UUID and send it to our technical support chat along with confirmation that trading permissions are enabled.
Template message for support:
Hello! I have prepared a portfolio for automated trading.
Portfolio Name: [Enter name, e.g., Bot Trading]
Portfolio UUID: [Paste your copied UUID, e.g., d8495a9e-c851-460f-9022-da5e5b66d734]
An API key with trading permissions (Trade) restricted exclusively to this portfolio has been created. Please connect my account.
